On Friday 10th July, Belle Vue Girls’ School celebrated with a Festival of Light! Students from Years 7 to 12 took part in a range of cross-curricular activities linked to the International year of light, and light –based technologies 2015.
There was a range of activities, which students participated. Including a visit to a mobile planetarium. Keighley astronomical Society presented its latest workshop on the ‘Islamic Contributions to Astronomy and Navigation.
The students were introduced to the great leap in scientific knowledge that took place in the Islamic world between the 8th and 14th centuries. Classes ran throughout the day where students made their own Astrolabe to navigate using the position of the stars, and made flip chars of the phases of the Moon. An important tool in the Islamic calendar.
A Y10 student commented, ‘I’m still buzzing … I enjoyed everything I did’.
A Year 8 student commented,‘It was a good day because we did different things and it was great to try something new and interesting.
